Take a tour of Wat Phra That Doi Kham
Uncover its history
- Pay homage to Luang Por Than Jai
- Pay homage to Thao Wessuwan, the world's largest statue
- Standing 19 meters tall
● Wat Phra That Doi Kham
Originally an ancient temple
over 1,300 years old
built in 1230 CE
by the son of Queen Chamadevi
of Hariphunchai
Originally named Wat Suwannabanpot
Later, it was abandoned as a deserted temple
● Legend of Doi Kham
This mountain is named Doi Kham
because, according to legend,
two giants, Pu Sae and Ya Sae,
received hair relics from the Buddha.
And when heavy rain fell for several days,
the water eroded and carried gold ore
down the mountain to the mouth of a cave,
hence the name Doi Kham.
● Later, in 1966,
a crypt was opened, revealing several artifacts. Within the temple grounds are Phra That Doi Kham, which enshrines the relics of the Lord Buddha, and Luang Por Than Jai, a sacred Buddha image.
● Luang Por Than Jai...
is a sacred Buddha image
where many people come to pray for blessings
for good fortune, success, and the fulfillment of their wishes.
When their wishes are granted, many return to offer jasmine flowers
to fulfill their vows.
● There is also an important pagoda
enshrining the relics of the Lord Buddha.
● Wat Phra That Doi Kham is also a symbol
used for landing aircraft
at Chiang Mai Airport.
