Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong or Wat Phra That Doi Thong (or Wat Phra That Doi Tong according to the Chiang Rai dialect) is one of the nine sacred pagodas located in Chiang Rai District, Chiang Rai Province. It is an ancient temple and is considered one of the “nine sacred pagodas” of the auspicious places of Chiang Rai Province. It is believed that Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong was built before King Mangrai the Great came to this area and ordered the establishment of Chiang Rai City in 1805. According to the history of Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong, it was built during the reign of King Ruean Kaew, the ruler of Chai Narai City (in the area of Wiang Chai District today) in 1483. During the construction of the temple, the main pagoda was built to enshrine the relics of the Lord Buddha, which were presented by a Sri Lankan monk to King Phangkrat of Yonok Nakphan. Phraya Phangkrat ordered the relics to be divided into 3 parts and enshrined in the important chedis of Chiang Rai Province today, namely Phra Maha Chinnathat Chao Doi Tung, Phra That Chao Chom Kitti, and Phra That Doi Chom Thong.
