Chiang Rai Black Temple, a black house museum on the theme of hell and death

#1月好去地方2025

The itinerary of the three temples in Chiang Rai, the Black Temple, also known as the Black House Museum, is not a temple, but a museum that houses various antiques and animal specimens. It was created by Thai artist Thawan Duchanee with the theme of hell and death. The dark building adds a sense of mystery, hence the name Black Temple.

The black, white and blue temples are not far from each other and are usually visited at the same time.

The Black Temple is made of teak, and its pointed and slanted high eaves give it a primitive feel, making one feel as if one has walked into a mysterious primitive tribe, which is terrifying. The admission ticket is 80 baht. The museum has a diverse collection, including many animal specimens, animal skins, bones and hunting tools, as well as sculptures and installation art with religious connotations. The overall artistic atmosphere is strong.

In addition to the main exhibition hall itself, there are many dark-colored buildings in the park, all of which have strange shapes. It feels like walking into the base camp of the artist's inspiration and creation, which is a very special experience.
