The cityscape, with its white walls and orange roofs against the azure backdrop of the Adriatic Sea, is so beautiful that it is also called the "Pearl of the Adriatic".

In 1979, its historical value was recognized and it was registered as a World Heritage Site.

However, it suffered severe damage from the Serbo-Croatian civil war that began in 1991, and in the same year it was registered as a World Heritage Site in Danger (World Heritage Sites in Danger).
