Danang, Vietnam | Linh Ung Pagoda's First Turning of the Dharma Wheel at Deer Park: A Majestic Representation of the Buddha's Compassionate Presence
One of the most breathtaking artistic sights at Linh Ung Pagoda on Ngu Hanh Son is the stone sculpture depicting the Buddha's First Turning of the Dharma Wheel at Deer Park. This scene, drawn from Buddhist texts, depicts Shakyamuni attaining enlightenment beneath the Bodhi tree and then expounding the Four Noble Truths to five monks in Deer Park. It is considered the official beginning of the Buddhist teachings.
The intricately crafted stone sculpture depicts the Buddha seated on a lotus pedestal, his face solemn and compassionate, his hands in a mudra, expounding the truth with wisdom and loving-kindness. Surrounded by monks, their expressions vivid and varied, he listens attentively. Auspicious deer roam leisurely in the background, symbolizing harmony and a sacred realm. The overall composition is magnificent and lifelike, allowing viewers to virtually experience the radiance and tranquility of the Buddha's presence.
Sunlight shines on the stone sculptures, creating a crisscross pattern of light and dark, imbuing the sculptures with life. This is not only a religious art work, but also a reproduction of time and space, reminding future generations that Buddhism has been passed down since then, spanning thousands of years, and is still blooming with compassion and wisdom in the world.
