Honestly, every time Anhui tourism is mentioned, everyone immediately thinks of Huangshan. But did you know? About 33-50 kilometers north of Huangshan lies a seriously underrated Taoist immortal mountain—Qiyun Mountain!
🏔️A niche Taoist famous mountain with a natural immortal aura
Qiyun Mountain, formerly known as "Baiyue," is one of the Four Great Taoist Mountains of China, alongside Longhu Mountain in Jiangxi, Wudang Mountain in Hubei, and Qingcheng Mountain in Sichuan. Historically, it has been praised as "Huangshan Baiyue is the best in Jiangnan," but very few people actually know about it!
The location is perfect—about 15 kilometers west of Xiuning County, with Huangshan and Xidi Hongcun to the north, Wuyuan to the south, and Huizhou Ancient City to the east. Nestled in the middle, Qiyun Mountain has become an obscure niche spot❗
But this "awkwardness" is exactly what gives it its unique, naturally immortal charm. At an elevation of 585 meters, the mountain isn’t tall but boasts 36 strange peaks and 72 peculiar rocks. After the rain clears, standing on the summit and looking out, the sea of clouds roils, and Huizhou-style villages scatter through the mist—it’s truly magical~
✨Must-visit attractions:
1️⃣ Cliff Inscriptions: There are currently 305 cliff inscriptions and 232 steles. Literati like Tang Bohu, Zhu Xi, and Xu Xiake have all left their marks here! The "Longevity" character on Shouzi Rock was inscribed by Zhu Xi, the Neo-Confucian master of the Southern Song Dynasty. It’s nine feet nine inches tall, and legend says touching it can help you live past 100~
2️⃣ Yuxu Palace: Under Zixiao Cliff is the "Zixiao Palace Xuan Emperor Stele Inscription" handwritten by Tang Bohu, measuring 7.6 meters high and 1.4 meters wide, embedded in the Danxia cliff face—its grandeur is truly breathtaking!
3️⃣ Yuehua Tianjie: A village at the mountain top with only 28 households, where Taoists and locals live together. Smoke from cooking fires mingles with incense smoke, blending religious and secular life. The Taoist temple touched by everyday life has a special warmth~
🎫Practical info:
● Ticket: Around 68 RMB for adults
● Opening hours: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
● Cable car operation: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
● Recommended visit duration: 1-2 days
💡Insider tips:
● You can take the cable car up; hiking the whole way takes about 4-5 hours
● There’s Qiyun Town at the foot of the mountain with amazing intangible cultural heritage performances at night
● The sea of clouds is most beautiful after rain, so check the weather forecast
● There’s a direct shuttle bus from Huangshan North Station, super convenient
Trust me, Qiyun Mountain is definitely a hidden treasure overshadowed by Huangshan! With over 1,200 years of Taoist history and Danxia landforms combined with Taoist culture, this kind of immortal aura is something Huangshan can’t offer~ Hurry before it gets popular!
