The Yungang Grottoes near Datong are one of China’s best-kept secrets. These massive Buddhist caves carved into sandstone cliffs feature over 50,000 statues ranging from a few inches to several stories high. I was completely in awe of the artistry—especially the gigantic Buddhas and intricate carvings that date back to the 5th century. The contrast between the peaceful statues and the stark cliffs is dramatic and moving. It's a bit off the typical tourist trail, but that only adds to the magic. Fewer crowds mean more time to connect with the history and silence of this incredible site. Don’t miss it.
