Who can relate? My first trip to Northwest China left me absolutely stunned by this "Route A" itinerary! From the deep blue of Qinghai Lake to the mystique of Dunhuang, from the purity of the salt lakes to the vibrant colors of the Danxia landforms, every day felt like unwrapping a surprise box. Every snapshot was wallpaper-worthy!
🌊 Day 1: Speechless at the beauty of Qinghai Lake right from Xining!
Arriving at Heimahe, Qinghai Lake unfolded before my eyes like a massive sapphire set in the grasslands. In the afternoon, we visited Chaka Salt Lake, where I walked barefoot into the water. The sky and lake merged into one, creating a perfect "Mirror of the Sky." Wearing light-colored clothes for photos here is a must! We stayed overnight in Delingha, a small but cozy city.
💎 Day 2: The glowing salt flowers of Chaka Salt Lake!
A lesser-known gem compared to Chaka, Chaka Salt Lake showcases nature's artistry. The white salt flats are adorned with salt flowers resembling coral, and the emerald-green lake water looks like jade. Walking here felt like stepping into another world. By evening, we reached Dachaidan, where the town's pristine starry sky revealed the Milky Way to the naked eye!
✨ Day 3: Double surprises with Emerald Lake and desert camping!
Dachaidan's Emerald Lake is absolutely ethereal! The various salt lakes display shades of green, blue, and cyan, offering new perspectives at every turn along the boardwalk. In the afternoon, we explored a Silk Road heritage site, pretending to stroll through ancient Roman streets. The highlight was desert camping! Lying on sand dunes under the stars, with a bonfire party to boot, the vibes were unmatched!
🎨 Day 4: A colorful day in Dunhuang!
The morning was spent at the Mogao Caves, marveling at the flying apsaras in the murals with a guide's narration, transporting us back a thousand years. In the afternoon, we headed to Mingsha Mountain, riding camels through the desert and climbing dunes to watch the sunset. The golden-red hues of the sand at dusk were breathtaking! I also tried a "flying apsara" photoshoot, donning traditional Hanfu and twirling in the desert, feeling like I had stepped out of a mural.
🌈 Day 5: Zhangye Danxia, a painter's palette come to life!
I had heard about the stunning Zhangye Rainbow Mountains, but seeing them in person was still awe-inspiring! The layered red, yellow, and orange mountains looked like a divine spill of paint. Especially at sunset, the colors became so vivid they seemed to flow. Be sure to take the scenic shuttle to the highest observation deck for the best views!
🐎 Day 6: A day as a herdsman on the Qilian Grasslands!
The final day was spent frolicking on the Qilian Grasslands. Riding a horse across the vast plains, with the wind rushing past, felt incredibly liberating. I also tried on traditional Tibetan attire for photos, standing against the backdrop of the distant Gangshika Snow Peak, feeling one with the land.
💡 Tips:
• The Northwest is dry, so bring moisturizing skincare and lip balm.
• The temperature difference between day and night is significant, so pack a jacket even in summer.
• The UV rays at the salt lakes and Danxia are intense, so don't forget sunglasses, hats, and sunscreen.
• Mogao Caves tickets need to be booked in advance, or you might not get in.
This route truly strings together the best of Northwest China, with new surprises every day. It's an unforgettable experience that will leave you longing to return. For anyone planning a trip to the Northwest, this "Route A" is a no-brainer—just go for it!
