Visiting both Edinburgh doesn’t need to stretch your budget. Instead of paying exuberant hotel prices in the popular tourist city, base yourself in Glasgow instead (see my other post why you should!).
Thanks to their close proximity and excellent transport links, you can see Edinburgh’s highlights in just one day while keeping Glasgow as your base. Here’s how to do it smartly, affordably, and without missing the essentials.
🚆 Getting There on a Budget
Train: From Glasgow Queen Street to Edinburgh Waverley, trains run every 15 minutes. Journey time is under 1 hour. Buy an off-peak day return for the best price (around £15).
Bus: Citylink and Megabus are often cheaper, starting at £5–£7 one way, and take about 1 hr 20 mins. They drop you in central Edinburgh, walking distance from main sights.
🏰 Suggested One-Day Itinerary
Morning: Arrive at Waverley Station and walk straight to Edinburgh Castle (tickets can be pricey. If you’re on a strict budget, admire the views from outside and explore Castle Hill instead).
Late Morning: Stroll down the Royal Mile, peeking into historic closes (narrow alleys) and visiting free spots like St. Giles’ Cathedral.
Lunch: Save money with a hearty sandwich or pie from a local bakery. Or grab picnic supplies at one of the UK famous meal deal shops and eat in Princes Street Gardens.
Afternoon: Walk to Arthur’s Seat for a budget-friendly hike with panoramic city views (about 1.5–2 hrs round trip).
Evening: Return to the Royal Mile for a pint in a traditional pub before heading back to Glasgow.
💸 Why It’s Great Value
No overnight costs since you’ll be back in Glasgow the same evening.
Many of Edinburgh’s best experiences (views, walks, architecture) are completely free.
Flexible transport options mean you can pick what suits your budget.
With a little planning, you’ll enjoy the best of Edinburgh’s history and scenery in just one day, without breaking the bank.
