Between the Bloom and the Shadow
Just visiting the garden in autumn brings its own Halloween magic, even without a ticketed event. The paths lined with dying leaves, the ornamental gardens beginning to fade, the play of shade under tall trees — it all adds up to that bittersweet autumn ambience. There was a Garden-To-Go event where you could fill pots with seasonal flowers and decorate them; nicely paced, not rushed, letting you pause and feel the crisp air, watch shadows lengthen. Even regular sections like the Arid Garden and Cactus Garden carry a kind of stark, skeletal beauty in the cooler weather. If you arrive in late afternoon, you get that golden light, soft wind, and the garden feels alive and haunted in a gentle way.
