Located in Eiheiji Town, Yoshida District, Fukui Prefecture, Eiheiji is the head temple of the Soto sect of Zen Buddhism, founded by Zen Master Dogen. Since its founding approximately 770 years ago, it has remained a "living Zen training center" where monks continue their rigorous daily training. The vast grounds are home to over 70 buildings, surrounded by cedar groves, creating a tranquil atmosphere.
A highlight is the Seven Halls of the Temple, where the monks live. The highlight is the breathtakingly beautiful Sanshokaku, with its ceilings painted with themes of flowers, birds, wind, and the moon. Walking through the corridors, the scent of the wood and the tranquility fill your soul.
When visiting, it is important to refrain from private conversations and respect the atmosphere as a place of training. You can also try copying sutras and experiencing zazen, offering a chance to unwind and calm your mind. In winter, the temple's snow-covered scenery creates a mystical atmosphere, popular with photography enthusiasts.
