It is almost Halloween Again! Visit Fengdu Ghost City!

Fengdu Ghost city is one of Chinas most popular attractions. I deliberately visited on a rainy day to avoid the crowds, and the rain actually added to the exciting atmosphere of the place! The temple complex is rather interesting and slightly different to other complexes in China due to its colours and art works. It’s definitely worth a visit if you are in Chongqing. However, be warned that on a public holiday this place is often so crowded that it can be frustrating!
Perched upon the mist-shrouded banks of the Yangtze River, Fengdu Ghost City is a place where myth, legend, and mortal imagination entwine. Here, the mountains themselves seem to murmur tales of the afterlife, for this ancient complex has long been revered as the gateway between the living and the dead. To wander its steep stairways and shadowed halls is to step into a theatre of spirits: a realm where Daoist and Buddhist visions of judgement, virtue, and redemption are carved in stone and painted upon temple walls.
Statues of stern judges glare from their pedestals, guardians of the underworld stand watch, and the infamous “Bridge of Helplessness” dares the visitor to cross—once believed to separate the worthy from the damned. Every shrine and pavilion holds a lesson, a moral woven into centuries of folklore, whispering of how one should live well in order to pass peacefully into the beyond.
Yet Fengdu is not all solemnity. The bright colours, the towering effigies, the sheer theatricality of the place transform it into a carnival of eternity. Fascination lingers in every echo, in every incense-laden breeze: a hauntingly beautiful reminder of China’s rich tapestry of belief, and the eternal dialogue between life, death, and the soul.
