Lao Ma Que (老麻雀) at Novo Plaza (Fosun) was a standout dining experience during our trip to Foshan. Tucked inside a modern complex, this Michelin-recommended Hunan restaurant delivered both in style and substance. The setting was refined, with elegant interiors that struck the perfect balance between traditional and modern.
We were there for a light meal and tried four dishes — each one left a strong impression:
• Fried Pork with Chili: Crispy edges, juicy meat, and a generous toss of dried and fresh chilies. Perfectly balanced heat and fragrance.
• Century Egg with Zhǎngshù Gǎng Chili: Surprisingly refreshing. The creamy yolk paired so well with the vibrant, zesty chili sauce.
• Stir-Fried Cabbage: A humble dish elevated by wok hei. Simple, sweet, and incredibly comforting.
• Pork Belly Wraps: Rich and tender slices of pork belly, paired with fresh herbs and wraps. Fun to assemble and even better to eat.
The service was warm, with staff checking in occasionally but not intrusively. Though portions weren’t huge, the quality made up for it. Prices are on the premium side, but for a Michelin-level restaurant in such a sophisticated space, it felt justified.
Highly recommend for anyone craving authentic, elevated Hunan cuisine in a modern yet cozy setting.
