Fuji Sengen Shrine, located in Fujiyoshida City, Yamanashi Prefecture, is a major shrine dedicated to Konohanasakiyahime-no-Mikoto, the deity of Mount Fuji. It serves as the main shrine of Kitaguchihongu Sengen Taisha Shrine and is a core component of the Mount Fuji World Cultural Heritage. The shrine grounds are surrounded by towering ancient trees, including approximately 500 maple and cedar trees. Every autumn (from early to mid-November), the crimson leaves and ancient buildings complement each other beautifully, creating a solemn and magnificent autumn landscape. The sacred atmosphere in front of the main shrine echoes with Mount Fuji, attracting countless worshippers and tourists to pray and enjoy the scenery. The Fuji Tomb Climbing Festival in July and the autumn foliage festival are particularly bustling.
Getting there: From Shinjuku, Tokyo, take the JR Chuo Line to Otsuki Station, then transfer to the Fujikyuko Line to Fujisan Station. The shrine is a approximately 10-minute walk away. The shrine is free to enter and is generally open from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM daily. During the fall foliage season, there are occasional nighttime illuminations, so please check official announcements. Visiting early in the morning in autumn will allow you to avoid the crowds and enjoy the shrine's spiritual energy and the tranquil beauty of the fall foliage.
