Fukuoka Sumiyoshi Shrine is one of the three major Sumiyoshi Shrines and is considered the progenitor of the 2,000 Sumiyoshi Shrines throughout Japan. It enshrines the gods who remove misfortune and bring good luck, as well as the gods who protect the safety of sailors. There were tourists, but there were also quite a few locals praying.
