[Fukuoka Prefecture] The impressive tower gate

Hakozaki Shrine, the Ichinomiya of Chikuzen Province

It is considered one of the three major Hachiman shrines in Japan.

The deities enshrined are
Emperor Ojin
Empress Jingu
Tamayorihime no Mikoto

The plaque hanging on the tower gate reads,

"Enemy country surrender," which is said to indicate a way of leading with the power of virtue,
and the enemy naturally succumbing and surrendering (royal way), rather than forcing the enemy to surrender by force (hegemonic way).

It is said to have been written by successive emperors.

When I was at Hakozaki Shrine,
I was surprised to see them flying very low overhead several times!
