Hakata Sennenmon Gate

#Fukuoka Attractions
Hakata Millennium Gate is a famous landmark. As the welcoming gate of the shrine and temple area of Hakata, it carries the meaning of carrying Hakata's past history and praying for a thousand years of prosperity in the future. It adopts the style of medieval Hakata temples and shrines, made of Japanese cypress, and has two sloping gabled roofs in the style of Kiritsumazukura.
Archaeological excavations have revealed that the Dazaifu Government Hall was decorated with demon tiles in the eighth century. The main gate inherited the wooden four-legged door structure of the Tsujidoguchi gate, and the door panels were made of thousand-year-old camphor trees donated by Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. The crossbeams were engraved with Hakata weaving patterns and hanging plaques. The Hakata Millennium plaque on the front was written by Nobuyoshi Nishitakatsuji, the abbot of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine and a descendant of Sugawara no Michizane.
