It is the largest old mosque in Penang. The Indian businessman who built this mosque, Cauder Mohudeen, was appointed as the "Kapitan" of the Indian community "Kining" by Sir George Leith, the then Deputy Governor of George Town. "Kining" was a general term used by local people in the early years to refer to South Indian immigrants, so the mosque was named Kapitan Kining.
