If you’re like me and want to enjoy a slow, photo-hip, hipster vibe while traveling, Penang’s George Town Street Art Quarter is definitely a must-go! This trip is tailor-made for those who like to slow down, explore slowly, and want to find some city hidden gems.
Georgetown has the nostalgia of an old colonial city, but what appealed to me the most was definitely the literary and casual vibe of the whole neighborhood. Every cafe, every wall, every alley, hides a story unique to Penang.
Attraction inventory recommendations:
Penang Street Art Quarter
📍Address: 316, Beach St, Georgetown, 10300 George Town, Penang, Malaysia
⏰ Opening hours: year-round, all day, any time you can come to check in!
This street art district really feels like a “slow roam” when walking in it. The most famous are several murals created by Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic, such as "Sisters and Brothers Ride Together" and "Teenage Riding a Bike" are must-sees. I photographed a mural N years ago, and today I came back with a new discovery - the art wall is constantly updated with new works, and there are more different sculptures around it. Every time I take a picture, I have a different angle and a different story.
There are some murals sandwiched in the middle of the shop lot, and you have to turn into the alley and slowly look for them. The best thing is: you don't have to rush the trip, you can really walk slowly, slowly look for them, and you will find some art that added a lot of new color to the city. There are many hipster cafes and local shops near the streets. After taking pictures, you can find a beautiful cafe to sit down and have a drink, looking out the window and slowly feeling the city life.
In addition, some friends who like photography or Sketch may wish to bring a notebook, camera, and choose an angle to slowly capture the unique literary and artistic feeling of Penang. There are no crowded tour groups here, but the degree of freedom is super high. Walk chill and rest at any time.
Practical tips:
1. The street art area is quite large, you can consider renting a bicycle to tour along the road, convenient and fun. But it is recommended to bring back water and apply sunscreen, because the weather in Malaysia is quite hot.
2. It is recommended to reserve half a day or even a day to stroll slowly, do not rush, can best feel the Penang literary and artistic small bourgeoisie side!
3. Remember to have plenty of phone/camera battery and be surrounded by photo spots!
4. Tired of walking can find a Cafe between the Shop lots to rest, there are many themed Cafes nearby - such as "Coffee in Penang", you can sit down and chill.
Transportation Guide:
It is very convenient to take a taxi/Grab from the city center and you can also book a local charter/transfer service on trip.com to arrive easily without the hassle of traffic.
Food Recommendations:
There are many authentic delicacies around George Town, such as the Pearl Coffee Shop or Nanyang Tea Room.
The Penang Street Art Quarter is not a large attraction, but walking slowly and taking pictures while walking is really full of literary healing. Perfect for those who want to escape the urban rhythm and enjoy slow life!
