Saint Nicholas's Church is one of three important churches in Ghent. Built in the 13th century, it holds significance as the first parish church in the so-called Low Countries, or present-day Benelux.
The church's architecture is in the Scheldt Gothic style, a characteristic of Gothic churches in Flanders, where the Scheldt River flows. The bluestone used in the church's construction was transported by boat from Tournai.
The interior of the church is adorned with beautiful paintings, carvings, and stained glass. Highlights include the "lantern tower," a transparent glass tower that lets in natural light, an organ created by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll in 1856, and a stained glass mural depicting the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ.
The church is still a place of worship, so be sure to check when visiting to avoid any public services. The church will be closed to visitors until the ceremony is over. There is no admission fee to enter the church.
