Nanga Parbat is a mountain located in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan. It is the ninth-highest peak in the world, with an elevation of approximately 8,126 meters above sea level. Part of the western Himalayas, it lies on the southern side of the Indus River. "Nanga Parbat" is Urdu for "Naked Mountain". In the local language (Kashmiri/Dardic), it is also called Diamir, meaning "King of Mountains". Nanga Parbat is nicknamed "Killer Mountain" due to the extreme difficulty of its ascent and the high number of fatalities in early 20th-century expeditions. The first attempt was made by a German expedition in the 1930s. Austrian Hermann Buhl became the first person to reach the summit on July 3, 1953, alone, in a legendary ascent.
