Gyeongju | Hwangridan-gil, a fusion of old and new hanok houses: A trendy transformation of the ancient capital of Silla

Known as a "museum without a roof," Gyeongju embraces the culture of a millennium-old capital as it prepares for APEC in the second half of this year. It's been twenty years since South Korea last hosted APEC.

Near Daereungwon and the ruins of Wolseong, Gyeongju's Hwangridan-gil, a street steeped in the history of the Silla Dynasty capital, has been transformed into a trendy street after a millennium.

Here you'll find large tracts of old hanok (traditional Korean houses) dating back to the 1960s, as well as newer, more modern hanoks. Cafés, restaurants, and unique shops are each uniquely decorated to attract tourists.

If you're curious about this ancient capital, where Trump and other world leaders will soon be visiting, here are a few recommended restaurants on Hwangridan-gil.

👍Kado&Kado Café: This newly built hanok-style café is instantly recognizable by the aroma of wood. The coffee and desserts are excellent, and they even offer a limited daily supply of turtle-shaped pineapple buns. 👍Gyeongju Medicinal Fruit Shop: Everyone is familiar with traditional Korean medicinal fruits. This long-established shop offers grapefruit flavor and another flavor similar to seaweed. Boxes of eight come in perfect souvenirs.
👍쓖Natural Chocolate: This hanok shop, located at a crossroads, is a famous raw chocolate shop in Gyeongju, Yeosu, and Jeonju. Besides pistachio flavor, they also offer a Korean flavor similar to mugwort.
👍Pharmacy Fortune Telling: This shop is quite interesting. You pay money to draw a lottery, then pick it up from the medicine cabinet, just like taking medicine. It's perfect for photos.
👍Carousel Small Goods Shop: They sell postcards, keychains, and other cute little items that girls will love.
👍황오명과 Traditional Cake: These traditional Korean cookies, resembling tile-shaped cakes, are also great souvenirs.

Many people who visit Gyeongju try the cheese-filled coin cake. This cake is also available in other parts of Korea and even Taiwan, so I won't go into detail.

📍Address: Poseok-ro, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Gyeongju-si, Hwangnam-dong, South Korea
