Located in Hakodate City, Hokkaido, the Goryokaku Ruins are a rare example of a Western-style star-shaped fortress in Japan. Built during the late Edo period, it was originally designed as a military fort to defend the port of Hakodate. In 1869, the "Battle of Hakodate" during the Boshin War took place here, making it a significant historical site of the late Edo period. Today, it has been transformed into Goryokaku Park, which is open to the public free of charge.
Walking around the grounds allows visitors to experience the remnants of the moat, stone walls, and tree-lined avenues. For a complete view of the unique star-shaped design, visitors can enjoy the aerial perspective from Goryokaku Tower. In spring, approximately 1,600 Somei Yoshino cherry trees bloom around the moat, creating a romantic cherry blossom spot. The park also offers lush greenery in summer, vibrant autumn foliage, and serene snowy landscapes in winter.
🚋 Transportation: About a 15-minute walk from the Hakodate City Tram "Goryokaku Koen-mae" stop, or take a bus from JR Goryokaku Station to reach the park.
