Peace Torii

#summervacay

Heiwa‑no‑Torii (Peace Torii) at Hakone Shrine, set majestically in Lake Ashi. Built in 1952 to commemorate Japan’s post-WWII sovereignty under the San Francisco Peace Treaty . In 1964, Prime Minister Yoshida Shigeru added the kanji (Heiwa – peace) to the shrine’s plaque, marking the 1200th anniversary of the shrine and the Tokyo Olympics, hence earning the name “Peace Torii” .

The vermilion torii appears to float on Lake Ashi and is flanked by centuries-old cedar trees, offering regular views of Mount Fuji in the distance . Serving as the gateway to Hakone Shrine, it symbolizes a transition into a sacred, peaceful space—truly photogenic at sunrise
