Hangzhou

Many family friends consider Hangzhou to be one of the most livable cities in China, and I would agree. It is easily accessible via high-speed rail, and getting around the city is fairly convenient and affordable. The most famous area is West Lake, where there are numerous walking trails, historic temples, pagodas, monuments, and tea plantations. Don’t miss Lingyin Temple, a massive Buddhist monastery dating back to 328 AD, and Leifeng Pagoda, which dates back to 975 AD and is a key site in the famous Chinese folktale Legend of White Snake. Aside from West Lake, there are also famous markets and museums (I recommend Museum of Traditional Chinese Medicine). Hangzhou is rich in history and culture and was an important center of commerce, so there is no shortage of things to see, taste, and learn.
