When talking about West Lake in Hangzhou, one of the most iconic and famous landmarks is the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon (三潭印月), an island in the middle of the water that's so famous it's even featured on the 1 yuan Chinese banknote. 🌙✨
Getting there
It's easy to get to this island. We recommend taking a boat from Hubin Park Pier for a ticket price of 70 yen. This island will take you to the first stop. After you've had your fill, you can continue on to other piers around the lake at no additional cost.
This route allows you to experience West Lake from the water, taking in the mountains, the city, and the vastness of the lake.
Key Highlights on the Island
• Three Stone Pagodas
The number one highlight here is the three circular stone pagodas built during the Ming Dynasty. They were originally built to regulate water levels, but later became decorative lanterns for the lake. On the night of the autumn full moon, the pagodas are lit. The light reflects off the surrounding water, creating a "mini-moon" that fills the lake, giving rise to the name "Three Pools Mirroring the Moon," which means "three pools reflecting the moon."
• Coffee Bean Walkway
This island is not very large, and its circular walkway, designed to resemble a coffee bean, offers a pleasant stroll around the island. Everywhere you look, you'll be surrounded by water.
• Bridge and Pavilion in the Water
Another highlight is the bridge and pavilion that span the center of the island, a popular photo spot, reflecting the tranquility of nature and the blend of traditional Chinese architecture.
Atmosphere 🍃
The island is tranquil, filled with shady trees, the gentle breeze, and the water lapping against the shore, perfect for a relaxing stroll. If the weather is good, the soft sunlight shining on the water creates an even more romantic atmosphere.
Strolling on this island in the middle of the lake feels like a break from the hustle and bustle of the city, even though it's so close to Hangzhou.
Recommended Route 🚢
After exploring this island to your heart's content, We recommend taking a boat to Huagang Park, then walking to the nearby Leifeng Pagoda. You'll enjoy both the water views from the island and the highest peak from the pagoda, making it a perfect day trip to West Lake.
