Xuchang West Lake Park is bounded by Laodong Road to the east, West Street to the north, Qingxu Street to the west, and Jian'an Avenue to the south. It encompasses the Little West Lake, located northwest of the moat. The lake is known for its exceptional beauty, and the Song Dynasty poet Su Shi praised it in a poem, "Although small, it resembles Xi Shi," hence the name.
The Little West Lake in Xuchang West Lake Park boasts a history of over 1,800 years. The Yongle Encyclopedia states, "Of the thirty-six West Lakes in the world, the West Lake of Xuzhou (Xuchang) is the best." West Lake Park was officially established in 1958. Ancient buildings such as the Dexing Pavilion, Tingshui Pavilion, Dushu Pavilion, and Plum Blossom Hall have been restored to their historic splendor. Dotted among the park are the Xiaohong Bridge, Yanbo Bridge, and Juxing Bridge, making it a popular leisure destination for residents. During the third national cultural relics survey, the Little West Lake site was designated an "immovable cultural relic." Xuchang's Little West Lake dates back to the late Eastern Han Dynasty. Excavation for city construction created a pit that later gathered water to form a lake.
Legend has it that when Cao Cao "held the emperor hostage to command the princes," he imprisoned Emperor Xian of Han on the shores of present-day West Lake in Xuchang. After generations of expansion, by the Northern Song Dynasty, when society and economy flourished, the people planted trees, willows, and lotus roots here, and Little West Lake gradually became a famous garden attraction in Zhongzhou. Later, when Su Shi was transferred to Hangzhou, Zhejiang, he wrote to the prefect Zhao Delin, suggesting that the name be changed to Little West Lake to distinguish it from Hangzhou's West Lake. The "Xuzhou Chronicle" of the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty states: "The water of Little West Lake originates from a spring on Xing Mountain, meanders and flows here, gathering and gathering, and connecting to the moat of the prefecture. The ancient sages who governed this state took note of the topography and water flow, building pavilions and terraces at high points and ponds at lower levels... Plum trees, lotus flowers, and lotus flowers abound, and the flowers and trees are so intertwined that it is impossible to list them all. The narrow path is suitable for horseback riding, and the shallow waters are suitable for boating. Because the lake is full of lotus flowers, it is called West Lake Lotus Boat, one of the Ten Scenic Spots of Xuzhou."
