I'm not convinced! Why does this Vietnamese restaurant get one Michelin star?

Stepping into Tầm Vị on Yên Thế Street, you immediately sense a balance between the old and the personal. With antique wooden décor, an ancestral-home vibe, soft lighting, and touches of incense in the air, the space feels like a gentle pause from Hanoi’s urban hum. The two-storey expansion and lush courtyard add breathing room, letting you lean back and take it all in.
Menu & Flavors
Tầm Vị doesn’t chase flashy plating or modern gimmicks — it champions subtle, soulful Northern Vietnamese cuisine, rooted in tradition but sharpened by seasonal nuance. Dishes like chả ốc (ham with periwinkle snails, herbs, vermicelli and fish sauce) delight with texture and freshness. The crab soup with malabar spinach in clear broth is delicate, light, yet deeply comforting. Fried tofu with spring onions, braised fish in fish sauce with pepper, ginger & lemongrass, and fried pork rinds with tomato sauce are standout treats.
Desserts shift with the seasons — summer brings iced longan or lotus-iced “soups” with coconut ribbons; winter warms you with ginger syrup and black sesame dumplings. Drinks are traditional, unpretentious: jasmine or lotus drinks, fresh coconut water, or a Hanoi beer when mood calls.
Service & Ambiance
The staff are friendly, English-speaking, helpful with the photo menu, which makes ordering for non-locals easier. Meals feel leisurely; you come to savor, not rush. Even though they don’t have wine, the atmosphere and food more than make up for it. The setting is serene despite being not far from the busier parts of Ba Đình.
