During our stroll through Miyajimacho, we were drawn into Yamada Sweets Shop by the sight of beautifully arranged Japanese confections in the window. Stepping inside, we discovered an inviting atmosphere with display cases full of colorful wagashi, mochi, and locally inspired sweets—each piece looked like miniature artwork.
We sampled a few items: a smooth, sweet red bean paste yokan and a sakura-mochi that was fragrant and perfectly balanced between sweet and subtly salty. Every bite was delicate, with textures that felt freshly made and melts in your mouth.
The staff were welcoming, offering tasting samples and explaining the sweets with patience, despite our limited Japanese. We also appreciated the tiny wooden tables by the shopfront, where we could sit and savor our treats while watching the town’s gentle foot traffic.
If you’re looking for an authentic, refined Japanese sweet stop in Miyajimacho, Yamada Sweets Shop is worth a visit—it’s charming, delicious, and a lovely pause in your day of sightseeing.
