Grand Torii Gate

#summervacay

Grand Torii Gate (O‑Torii) of Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima Island—one of Japan’s most iconic and spiritually meaningful landmarks: The Grand Torii (O‑Torii) stands about 16.6–16.8 m tall, with main pillars roughly 13.4 m high and 9.9 m in circumference, and a crossbeam spanning ~23 m. Positioned offshore—it appears to float at high tide, creating a mystical, reflective spectacle. At low tide, visitors can walk up to it across the seabed.
Supported by its own weight (~60 tons) and anchored with buried wooden stakes, it remains upright even in storms and typhoons. Masterful Heian-period construction techniques ensure its long-term stability.
