[Kitakyushu] The northernmost shrine in Kyushu, located directly under the Kanmon Bridge

"Mekari Shrine"

Moji Ward, Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture
25-minute walk or 7-minute drive from JR Mojiko Station

Founded in 200 AD, this shrine is located at the northernmost tip of Kyushu.

"Mekari" The character "Mekari" is pronounced "Mekari."

Directly above the shrine, you can see the Kanmon Bridge connecting Fukuoka and Yamaguchi, and the Kanmon Strait is right in front of the shrine.

Large ships can be seen passing by.
The opposite shore is Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture.
It felt so close.

The famous "Mekari Ritual," held every year on New Year's Day according to the lunar calendar, is a midnight ritual in which Shinto priests harvest wakame (seaweed) and arame (rice bran) cloth.
I've only ever seen it in photos, but it seems like quite a few people go to see it.

The "Fukumikuji" fortune slip I received was a cute "fuku" (luck) = "pufferfish" design. 🐡
