[Heguri Town] The final resting place of the Sengoku period hero, Matsunaga Hisahide, "Shigisan Castle Ruins"

Shigisan Castle, built from the summit of Mount Odake, where the Kubachi Gohodo Hall is located, to the northern ridge, is one of Nara Prefecture's largest medieval castles (mountain castles), measuring approximately 700m north to south and 550m east to west. 🏯
⁡⁡
⁡ It was originally built on the grounds of Takayasu Castle, and while some say it was built by Kusunoki Masashige, the details are unclear. The full castle is said to have been built around 1536 by Kizawa Nagamasa, who was based in Kawachi Province.

However, in 1542, the castle was burned down after Kizawa's death during the Battle of Taiheiji. Later, in 1559, Matsunaga Hisahide, who invaded Yamato Province, renovated Shigisan Castle and constructed a large group of enclosures.

There are various theories, but it's believed that Hisahide's rule of Yamato was based on Tamon Castle (now Nara Municipal Wakakusa Junior High School) as his political base and Shigisan Castle as his military base. 🤔 ⁡
⁡⁡
⁡At the northern end of the Godan plain is a site thought to be the site of Hisahide's residence, known as "Matsunaga Yashiki." There's a wooden warrior statue standing there by itself, so why not take a photo? 📸
⁡⁡
⁡The site of the "Shigisan Castle Ruins" stone monument is believed to have been the site of the main citadel, and according to records, there was a tower tower similar to a castle tower. It's said that Nobunaga modeled Azuchi Castle after Shigisan Castle. 💡⁡
⁡⁡
⁡ Because Shigisan Castle was such a key base controlling the Kawachi-Yamato route, a fierce battle for control ensued between the allied forces of Tsutsui Junkei and Miyoshi Yasunaga and Matsunaga Hisahide. ⚔️⁡
⁡⁡
⁡Then, in the fateful year of Tensho 5 (1577), Matsunaga Hisahide, surrounded by the Oda army, set fire to the castle and committed suicide. 👻 During this time, Chogosonshiji Temple was also burned down. 🔥

The temple was rebuilt during Hideyoshi's reign, but the castle was abandoned. Even today, the remains of the moats, including the remains of the enclosure and the entrance to the Matsunaga residence, remain, making it a place for history buffs to indulge in their fantasies.

On the way back, I went down to the east side of the Matsunaga residence and noticed a wooden fence. Could it be that they're rearming the area? 🥹 It would be so cool if they were to partially restore it along with Kataoka Castle (Kamimaki Town) ❤️🔥
