Suomenlinna, commonly known as the "Castle of Finland"! 🚢 This sea fortress, consisting of six islands off the coast of Helsinki, is a military masterpiece built by the Swedes in 1748 to protect against the Russian threat. Its ingenious star-shaped design boasts zero blind spots! 😎 It later came into the hands of the Russian Empire and played an active role in the wars of the 19th century. After Finland gained independence in 1917, it was officially renamed "Suomenlinna" and shifted from military to cultural heritage status in 1973. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991 and is now a hugely popular attraction in Helsinki! Over 700,000 people visit each year for picnics and strolls! 🇫🇮
Once you arrive on the island, head to the Visitor Centre! 📍 Pick up a map and digital guide here and set off on the Blue Route. Once you pass through the magnificent King's Gate 🏛️ tunnel, you'll be amazed by the impressive artillery batteries! Dig deeper into history at the Suomenlinna Museum 🎨 and the Vesikko submarine exhibit. In summer, swim at the beach or enjoy the spectacular view from the church bell tower. Enjoy Finnish sweets at Cafe Vanille ☕! This peaceful island, home to 850 residents, will make you feel like you've traveled back in time. The autumn leaves and winter snowscapes are also romantic ✨. It's a perfect spot for families and couples, and will cleanse your soul!
Take the municipal ferry from Helsinki Market Square (Kauppatori) for 15 minutes. Board with an HSL Zone A ticket (€3.70 one way, €9.70 all day)! In summer, the JT-Line water bus is also convenient.
Admission to the island is free 💸 The museum costs an additional fee (€6-8).
Open year-round, but be sure to check the last ferry departure time 📅 (8 PM - 11 PM depending on the season).
No cars required on the island; explore on foot or by rented bicycle 🚲!
This is sure to be the highlight of your Helsinki trip! Feel the sea breeze and stimulate your sense of adventure 🚀
