A Laid-Back Day in Himeji – Castles, Calm & a Few Furry Friends

#cityplaybook

Himeji is best known for its stunning white castle, but there’s more to this charming city than just its famous landmark. It’s a great place for a relaxed day out—where nature, history, and quiet moments all come together.

I started my morning with a peaceful visit to Himeji Gokoku Shrine, tucked just beside the castle grounds. With its red torii gates and serene surroundings, it’s the kind of spot that instantly calms your mind.

Of course, Himeji Castle is a must. The contrast of white plaster walls against the blue sky is breathtaking—and it’s just as impressive up close as it is from afar. Even just walking around the grounds is a treat.

For a fun, low-key afternoon, I popped into the Himeji City Zoo, located right next to the castle. It’s a small, local zoo, but full of charm and perfect for slowing things down after sightseeing.

Why I recommend Himeji:
・It’s easy to explore on foot, with peaceful spots and scenic views around every corner
・You can enjoy iconic history and quiet green spaces all in one gentle stroll
