Located in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture, Yōkien is a Japanese garden that combines historical significance with an elegant atmosphere. Originally the residence garden of a senior retainer of the Hirosaki Domain, it retains the layout of an Edo-period samurai estate and was later renovated and opened to the public. The garden features a traditional pond-centered strolling design, with ponds, small bridges, artificial hills, and carefully arranged plants blending harmoniously. Each season offers its own unique charm: cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, vibrant autumn leaves, and snow-covered landscapes in winter, showcasing the serene beauty of northeastern Japanese gardens.
Visitors can explore the garden's architecture and tea rooms, some of which host small exhibitions and cultural events, providing an intimate experience of Hirosaki's traditional charm. With fewer tourists, Yōkien is an ideal spot for a peaceful walk away from the hustle and bustle.
🚶♀️ For transportation, it’s about a 15-minute bus ride from JR Hirosaki Station. Alternatively, you can plan a visit alongside Hirosaki Castle and Park for a half-day or full-day cultural excursion.
