A day trip to Hita is enough

Arriving in Hita by bus from downtown Fukuoka, the air felt noticeably different. There were almost no tall buildings, and the quiet atmosphere, reminiscent of a traditional Japanese countryside, was relaxing.

As I walked slowly through the town, small shops caught my eye. The soft-serve ice cream I had at the ice cream shop next to the local supermarket tasted ordinary, but perhaps because of the leisurely travel, it tasted even sweeter and more refreshing.

In the afternoon, I stopped by a soy sauce brewery, a specialty of Hita. Inside the century-old traditional building, the strong aroma of fermented soy sauce wafted through the air. The soy sauce I tasted had a deep, savory flavor amidst its salty notes. It was a stark contrast to the soy sauce I usually drink, so I took a small bottle home as a souvenir.

At the traditional sake brewery, I was able to sample nihonshu and a liquor reminiscent of makgeolli, a type of rice wine we are familiar with. The brewery, nestled in a lush forest and clear air, had a charm entirely different from the large factories in the city.

Though it was only a two-day, one-night stay, Hita was a town with a tranquility and profound flavors that were completely different from the city. Strolling the quiet streets, I found joy in a soft-serve ice cream, and tasting soy sauce and traditional sake at a long-established brewery added a richer flavor to my trip.

Within a short distance from Fukuoka, yet offering a unique experience, Hita was a charming destination worth visiting even on a busy schedule. 🍦🍶🌿
