The Tian Tan Buddha, also known as the Big Buddha, began construction in 1990 and was completed on December 29, 1993, a date considered by Chinese Buddhists as the day of Buddha's enlightenment. Upon completion, monks from around the world were invited to the opening ceremony, which was attended by distinguished guests from Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, India, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
On October 18, 1999, the Hong Kong Post Office issued a commemorative stamp featuring the Big Buddha, valued at HK$2.50. On May 22, 2012, this stamp was also included in a special festival stamp series valued at HK$3, celebrating the birth of Shakyamuni Buddha.
