Seeking Bauhinia in Tung Chung | Notes on the Bauhinia Education Trail | Undiscovered Community Attractions and Family Nature Lessons

#RegisterAugustHotelTester2025

In the bustling city of Hong Kong, there are always unexpected little corners that hide fascinating community stories. This time, I visited a unique trail between Fu Tung Estate and Yu Tung Court in Tung Chung—the Bauhinia Education Trail and the adjacent Fu Tung Bauhinia Garden.

[Bauhinia Education Trail]
📍 Location: Between Fu Tung Estate and Yu Tung Court in Tung Chung
💰 Admission: Free

This educational trail is very short, only a few dozen meters long, and runs alongside a covered walkway. Its centerpiece is a series of display panels offering interesting facts about Bauhinia, Hong Kong's city flower. For example, you can learn about the different varieties of Bauhinia, their distribution in Hong Kong, and the origins of its designation as Hong Kong's city flower since 1965.

Fu Tung Bauhinia Garden
📍 Location: Behind Kai Tung House and Hei Tung House, Yu Tung Court, Tung Chung
💰 Admission: Free

The Fu Tung Bauhinia Garden is located along the Education Trail. After passing Kai Tung House and Hei Tung House, you'll see the "Fu Tung Bauhinia Garden" sign. According to information, it opened in 2000 and is the first "Bauhinia Garden" located within a public housing estate in Hong Kong. The garden is approximately the size of two basketball courts. What's particularly unique is that the officiating guests, along with over a hundred kindergarten children from Tung Chung, planted a hundred Bauhinia saplings during the opening ceremony. This garden feels like a truly meaningful community garden.

📌 My Visit and Suggestions:

Our visit wasn't during the Bauhinia bloom season, and without the vibrant blossoms, the garden's landscape seemed rather plain. Therefore, we strongly recommend visiting during the blooming season (November to March) for a more enjoyable experience.

While the educational trail's displays are concise and to the point, they appear a bit dated, and their overall interactivity and appeal are limited, making it more of a small community knowledge corner.

However, if you visit during the peak bloom of the Bauhinia trees, combining the information learned from the educational trail with the actual observations of the Bauhinia Garden, it can become a relaxing parent-child nature lesson. It's particularly suitable for incorporating into a Tung Chung itinerary, such as grabbing snacks at Fu Tung Market, before or after the Ngong Ping 360 ride, or making a 15-30 minute stop after shopping at Citygate. For parents living in Tung Chung or planning a visit, it's a great addition to your itinerary.
