Smangus, located deep in the mountains of Jianshi Township, Hsinchu, is an indigenous Atayal tribe known as the "Tribe of God." It preserves the purest mountain forest atmosphere and warm human touch. For a two-day, one-night trip, it is recommended to travel slowly and not rush, allowing your body and mind to immerse in the mist, giant trees, and starry sky.
Day 1|Depart for the Mountains · First Exploration of the Tribe
Depart from Taipei or Hsinchu in the morning; it takes about 4 to 5 hours by car to reach the tribe. Along the way, you can make short stops at Jianshi Old Street or Yulao Scenic Platform for supplies and photos. Upon arrival in Smangus, first register at the tribe. If you choose to stay at a guesthouse or church cabin, it is recommended to book in advance. In the afternoon, take a leisurely walk around the tribe, admire the Atayal-style wooden houses and church, and visit local small farmers’ coffee shops or handmade craft stores. At dusk, enjoy the sunset and evening glow amid the mist, and at night, it’s the perfect time for stargazing—the sky full of stars is especially magnificent without light pollution.
Day 2|Giant Tree Trail · Dialogue with the Forest
After enjoying an indigenous-style breakfast in the morning, embark on the classic "Giant Tree Trail Hike." The entire route is about 10 kilometers and takes 4 to 5 hours round trip, with dense forests and fresh air along the way. When you reach the giant tree area, the majestic sacred trees make you feel the sanctity and tranquility of nature. Return to the tribe for lunch at noon. In the afternoon, you can have a cup of coffee at the mid-mountain viewing platform, take the last photo of the sea of clouds, and then descend the mountain to return.
✨TIPS
1. Mountain roads are winding and narrow; be sure to use a four-wheel-drive vehicle and check fuel in advance.
2. The temperature in the mountains is about 10 degrees Celsius lower than the plains; bring warm clothing and rain gear.
3. The giant tree trail requires physical strength; it is recommended to wear non-slip hiking shoes and carry water.
4. Mountain area network signals are unstable; download offline maps and backup accommodation information beforehand.
5. Respect the tribe’s culture; do not take photos of residents or ritual spaces without permission, and maintain a friendly attitude.
🌿This trip offers little entertainment but is a deep dialogue with nature—when the mist clears and sunlight shines on the giant trees, you will understand why Smangus is called the "Tribe of God."
