🏞️ Zhuilu Old Trail: An Epic Cliff Hike in Taroko Gorge

#mytraveldiary

Perched high above the marble-carved depths of Taroko Gorge, the Zhuilu Old Trail is not just a hike—it’s a confrontation with gravity, history, and awe. Narrowly etched into the cliffside some 700 meters above the canyon floor, this trail offers one of the most thrilling and scenic hikes in all of Taiwan A B.

🧗♂️ The Path of Nerve and Legacy
Originally a hunting route for indigenous tribes, later expanded by Japanese colonials using hand tools and dynamite, the trail still retains its raw edge A. Much of it is barely wide enough for two people to pass, with no guardrails and a sheer drop that plunges deeper than the height of Taipei 101 A. Every step demands focus, especially along the final 500-meter stretch where the cliffside narrows and the valley yawns open beneath your feet.

🌄 Scenic Majesty
Despite the adrenaline, the reward is profound: panoramic views of Taroko Gorge, the Liwu River slicing through marble walls, and the surreal silence that only comes when you’re suspended between sky and stone. It’s a place where nature’s scale dwarfs everything—your fears, your thoughts, even your sense of time.

⚠️ Safety & Access
Due to its danger and ecological sensitivity, access is strictly regulated. You’ll need a permit, and entry is only allowed between 7 AM and 10 AM C. Currently, only 3.1 km of the trail is open due to earthquake and typhoon damage in 2024 C. Hikers must double back after reaching the Cliff Outpost.
