If you're looking for the most iconic Buddhist landmark in Hue, look no further than Thien Mu Pagoda (Chùa Thiên Mụ). Nestled on the banks of the Perfume River, it boasts a history spanning over 400 years, dating back to 1601, when Nguyen King Nguyen Hoang commissioned its construction. It is one of Vietnam's oldest and most iconic Buddhist temples.

From afar, the seven-story, octagonal Phước Duyên Tower rises majestically from the hilltop. Its red brickwork contrasts beautifully with the blue sky and lush greenery, becoming a defining feature of Hue. Ascending the steps, you'll be greeted by towering ancient trees and a gentle breeze blowing across the Perfume River, creating a tranquil and solemn atmosphere.

The temple houses Guanyin and other Buddhas, and is filled with the lingering scent of incense. The courtyard also preserves many precious cultural relics, the most eye-catching of which is an old blue car. This was the car that Buddhist monk Thich Quang Duc took when he went to Saigon to self-immolate in protest in 1963. It has become an important witness to the modern history of Buddhism in Vietnam.
