The end of the road

Visiting the Siachen Base Camp was an interesting detour during my Ladakh road trip. While foreigners can't actually enter the army camp itself, the drive there is spectacular. The road ends right at this dramatic point where you're surrounded by these ancient, weathered mountains that look like they've been there forever.

What makes it worth the trip is the view over the Nubra Valley on the way - wide open landscapes with that classic Ladakh beauty. At the base camp area, there's a small memorial and a shrine. The air feels thin and clean, and there's this quiet sense of being at the edge of something vast.

I only stayed about 30 minutes because it's seriously high altitude and gets cold fast, but it was a cool experience just to stand where the road runs out, knowing the glacier begins beyond what you can see. Not your typical tourist spot, but interesting if you're already exploring Nubra Valley. Just don't expect facilities - it's very much a functional military zone with basic roadside stops.
