Located on the coast of Ise City, Mie Prefecture, Futami Okitama Shrine has long been worshipped as a place of purification before visiting Ise Grand Shrine. The Meotoiwa (Married Couple Rocks), a symbol of matchmaking, are lined up side by side in the expansive sea, seemingly representing the bond between the gods.
The sunrise between the Meotoiwa rocks is a spectacular sight, and around the summer solstice, you can see the mystical moment when the sun just peeks out from between the rocks. Additionally, the two rocks, one large and one small, tied together with a shimenawa rope—the Male Rock and the Female Rock—are said to bring good fortune in marital harmony, good relationships, and household safety.
The shrine grounds are filled with stone frog statues, which many people stroke in hopes of blessings such as a safe return and renewed youth. They're also a popular and adorable photo spot.
