Jerash was founded in the 4th century BC by Alexander the Great, and later became one of the ten cities of the Decapolis, a league in the eastern Roman Empire. It flourished during the Roman and Byzantine periods, reaching its peak in the 2nd century AD.

There are well-preserved ruins including temples, theaters, and plazas.
