Jiayuguan Pass marks the western terminus of the Ming dynasty Great Wall and stands as a strategic fortress city. Built around 1372, this trapezoidal citadel was a crucial Silk Road gateway and boundary post to the desert. It’s remarkably intact—with inner and outer walls, moats, beacon towers, and a museum interpreting frontier life and military artifacts. The contrast between the brick fortress and surrounding arid landscape provides dramatic photo opportunities and historical insight into China’s western frontier.
