The Overhanging Great Wall in Jiayuguan 🏯 is like a dragon climbing up the desert hills of Gansu. Built during the Ming Dynasty, it was part of the western defenses of the Great Wall, guarding the end of the empire. The wall here is steep—almost clinging to the mountainside—earning its name “Overhanging.” Climbing up, the desert wind in your face 🌬️ and the endless Gobi landscape stretching out below, you feel the solitude the soldiers once faced. It’s smaller than the famous Beijing sections, but raw, rugged, and unforgettable.
🚇 How to get there
From Jiayuguan city center 🏙️, the wall is about 7 km away.
By taxi 🚖 / Didi: Around 20–30 RMB (~€3–4), 15 minutes.
By public bus 🚌: Bus 4 from Jiayuguan Railway Station stops nearby.
Many travelers also combine it with a visit to Jiayuguan Fortress 🏰.
💰 How much does it cost
Entrance fee: 120 RMB (inc. everything)
Bus fare: 1–2 RMB.
Climbing the Overhanging Great Wall feels like stepping onto the very edge of ancient China—where empire met desert and legend began 🌄.
