October 24, back from Jiuzhaigou, here’s some harsh truth...

Who understands! Missed the right light and shadow, chose the wrong viewing platform, and ruined the stunning late October autumn scenery photos… Summarizing painful lessons, this guide covers all the photography tips and routes 📸
·
☁️ Recent Weather & Gear
Late October is mostly sunny, with occasional light rain. Plenty of sunshine during the day but not too hot; a softshell jacket with a liner is just right; temperatures drop quickly at dusk, so add a thin down jacket to stay warm. Be sure to bring a telephoto lens, great for capturing details of colorful forests and waterfalls, and pack a waterproof bag to protect your gear from waterfall spray.
·
🌊 Best Spots for Light & Shadow
- Mirror Lake: The famous reflection ceiling lives up to its name! The lake surface is like a mirror reflecting snowy mountains and colorful forests. Before 8 AM, when there’s no wind, you can capture the “fish swimming in the sky” scene. In the afternoon, wind breaks the reflection.
- Nuorilang Waterfall: The 320-meter-wide waterfall is breathtaking. Around 3 PM, shoot against the light to catch rainbows in the mist, making the white waterfall look like it’s edged with colors.
- Changhai Lake: A high-altitude lake with early snow-capped mountains, deep blue water reflecting golden forests. In the afternoon, when sunlight hits at an angle, the mountain glare is less, and the forests appear redder and more vibrant.

🗺️ Light & Shadow Photography Route
1. Take the first sightseeing bus at 7:30 AM to Mirror Lake to capture perfect reflections before 8 AM;
2. At 10 AM, head to Rize Valley, shoot the well-lit Five Flower Lake first, then hike to Pearl Shoal;
3. At 2 PM, go to Nuorilang Waterfall, wait for angled sunlight to capture rainbows, then head to Changhai Lake for snow mountain and colorful forest shots together;
4. One hour before sunset, visit Shuzheng Lakes cluster to shoot wooden house silhouettes during the blue hour.

📸 Photography Tips for Light & Shadow
- Mirror Lake: Stand on the east side boardwalk, use a wide-angle lens to capture the full panorama of “snow mountains + colorful forests + reflection,” have people stand to the side as accents without blocking the view;
- Nuorilang Waterfall: Don’t crowd the front viewing platform! The opposite mountaintop platform offers a full panorama including waterfall, colorful forests, and sky;
- Changhai Lake: Stand on the left side of the viewing platform, avoid crowds, use panorama mode to shoot the shoreline, placing the snow mountain in the center for a grand effect.
·
🍲 Heartwarming Food Recommendations
- Yak hot pot: Authentic at the valley entrance guesthouses, add a piece of Tibetan cheese for a richer broth;
- Highland barley noodles: Handmade noodles with great chewiness, served with tomato yak meat sauce, a bowl warms you up instantly;
- Sweet tea: Easier to accept than butter tea, tastes like milk tea, and leftovers can be stored in a thermos to take away.
·
💡 Tips to Avoid Pitfalls
- Don’t sleep in at Mirror Lake! Staying at the valley entrance is necessary to catch the first sightseeing bus; arriving an hour late means missing the reflection time;
- Wear a waterproof jacket at Nuorilang Waterfall! Water spray will soak your clothes, and protect your camera accordingly;
- Don’t hike too far at Changhai Lake! The viewing platform is enough for panoramic shots; high altitude makes walking tiring, save energy for other spots.
