Built by the Maeda family, lords of the Kaga domain, during the Edo period, Kenrokuen is one of Japan's most famous gardens, designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty by the national government.
Kenrokuen was named after its six scenic beauties: spaciousness, tranquility, manmade beauty, ancient elegance, spring water, and panoramic views.
🌸Cherry blossoms in spring,
☀️fresh greenery in summer,
🍁red leaves in autumn,
❄️snow-hanging lanterns in winter—
The charm of Kenrokuen lies in the different expressions it displays throughout the seasons.
📍Location: 1 Kenroku-cho, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture
⏰Opening Hours: Varies seasonally (fees apply)
💧Gourd Pond (Hisagoike)
This gourd-shaped pond in the garden's center is said to be the birthplace of Kenrokuen.
The trees and lanterns reflected on the water's surface are stunning, adding to the garden's tranquility.
⛲Japan's Oldest Fountain
This fountain uses the natural pressure of Lake Kasumigaike to create a spring of water. The fountain is 3.5 meters high, reaching the same height as the pond.
This is Japan's oldest fountain, showcasing the wisdom and technology of the Edo period, without the use of pumps.
🌲Karasaki Pine and Neage Pine
The Karasaki Pine resembles a crane with its wings spread, while the Neage Pine has roots rising above the ground.
Both are famous trees symbolizing longevity and prosperity, and their yukitsuri (hanging shackles) are a spectacular sight.
At night, the light of the lanterns reflects on the water, creating a fantastical atmosphere completely different from the daytime. ✨
We recommend taking a leisurely stroll while listening to the sounds of the fountain and the wind.
Kenrokuen, a symbol of Kanazawa, where history and nature coexist in harmony.
It's beautiful no matter the season, and you'll have a truly refreshing time here! 🍃
