#Historic Site of Lane 60, Shandeng Street - Gushan District, Kaohsiung City

#AugustDestinations2025
This historic site, located at Lane 60, Dengshan Street, between the foothills of Shoushan Mountain and the National Sun Yat-sen University campus, comprises the remains of the Kaohsiung Port Office during the Japanese colonial period, including stone embankments and air-raid shelters, as well as the remains of postwar mountain settlements. In 1864, the area was named "Dashui Bay" due to the influx of a spring from Shoushan Mountain. Foreign merchant ships building ports in Kaohsiung at the time would come here to obtain drinking water. Famous figures from the time have also left their mark here, including Robert Swinhoe, Liu Mingchuan, and Crown Prince Hirohito. Robert Swinhoe (1836-1877), the first British consul to establish a consulate in Takau, was also present. In 1888, Liu Mingchuan, then the Governor of Taiwan, built a fort on the summit of Shoushan's Daping Peak. Crown Prince Hirohito of Japan embarked on his "Taiwan Journey" in 1923. This was once a historical site where ancient roads and waterways intersected. However, as time passed, this past was gradually forgotten, leaving only the rebuilt structures and remaining ruins for future generations to commemorate.
