Khao Yai National Park is the 1st National Park of Thailand, declared on 18 September 1962. It covers 2,165.55 square kilometers in 4 Provinces of Saraburi, Nakhon Ratchasima Prachin Buri and Nakhon Navok. The highest peak is Khao Rom at 1,351 meters above mean sea level.
Khao Ya National Park is the headwater for important rivers like Prachin Buri River, Nakhon Navok River, Lam la Khong, Lam Phra Ploenc and Huai Muak Lek.
Such rivers play the important role to support livelihood of local communities for agriculture and livestock industries. It is also a popular place amongst locals and tourists for trekking, bird and wildlife watching.
We self-explored the Nong Phak Chi trail and spent some time at the observation tower. It was a pity we didn’t spot any elephant. Perhaps it’s best to book a guided tour and catch the right time.
We also visited the 25m Heo Suwat Waterfall. Note to be careful of leeches along the way.
